A Dynamic Artistic Season coming to the Opera House
It promises to be a great upcoming season for music and theatre at the Opera House. With rehearsals and events creating a buzz about the Opera House, crowds can expect some wonderful entertainment including: the regular bi-weekly Coffee Houses, “The Importance of Being Earnest” - Valentine’s Dinner Theatre in February, our High School Operetta of “Guys and Dolls” in March, a spring children/family production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” in April (presented by the Jr. Xplor Drama club and DanceWorks classes), and a super Festival Season in April including Piano, Vocal, Band, and Speech Arts (new).
Importance of Being Earnest
Considered the original Valentine’s Comedy as well as one of the most famous of comedies of all time, this masterpiece was Oscar Wilde's most brilliant tour-de-force as a witty and buoyant comedy-of-manners. Delighting millions in countless productions ever since its first performance in London on February 14, 1895, "The Importance of Being Earnest” has been celebrated not only for its light-hearted ingenuity of its plot, but for its inspired dialogue.
Join Candlewick Players as they present this classic comedy filled with romance, misunderstanding, and comedy galore at the Manitou Opera House. Friday and Saturday host a complete 3-course meal including: garden salad; roast beef, baked potato and vegetables; and a delightful dessert. Sunday then hosts a Dessert Theatre with a selection of desserts.
For tickets, email us or call the Manitou Opera House box office: 204-242-3160. Tickets are also available at Mueller’s Hardware with the Dinner Theatre tickets at $32 and the Dessert Theatre tickets at $20. Proceeds from the performance will go towards the High School Operetta performance of Guys and Dolls planned for March, also at the Opera House.
Candlewick Players will present the production the following weekend at the Kenmor Theatre in Morden on Friday and Saturday evenings, Feb 17 & 18.
Guys and Dolls
Candlewick and Prairie Spirit School Division are pleased to present the acclaimed Broadway musical, “Guys and Dolls”. Based on the book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows with the music and lyrics of Frank Loesser, this oddball romantic comedy is set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City.
Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, 'Guys and Dolls' soars with the spirit of Broadway as it highlights a cast of vivid characters on the streets, mission houses, and sewers of New York. It is ideal for audiences of all ages with memorable music and a fun storyline.
This year’s presentation includes a host of cast and crew and though the lion’s share of the performers are from the Nellie McClung Collegiate, we are excited to include additional cast and crew from Crystal City, Pilot Mound, and Miami. Organizers for this year’s presentation include: Richard J. Klassen (Producer/Director), Caitlyn Cranmer (Assistant Director and School Liaison), Evelyn Ramage (Vocal Coach), Lindsey Knight (Choreographer), Ruth Barker (Stage Manager/Costume Designer), Vanessa Klassen (Pianist/Production Assistant), Joy Pauls (Production Assistant), Jennifer Dobson (Production Assistant), Kyle Goertzen (Administrative Assistant), Bill Howatt (Sound Technician/Mentor) as well as a variety of other volunteers who are assisting in mentoring the youth towards performance excellence.
Students are already getting excited about their performances and invite friends, family, and our communities to circle the performance dates of: Thursday, March 8 (7 PM); Friday, March 9 (7 PM); and Saturday, March 10 (2 PM). All performances at the Manitou Opera House.
For additional information, contact the Manitou Opera House Box Office 204-242-3160. Tickets at Mueller's Hardware, through phone reservations at the Manitou Opera House, or at the door.
DanceWorks Students Present "Tales from the Toyshop"
Students from the DanceWorks Studio entertained and impressed wonderful crowds at their annual fall presentation this last November 11, 12 at the Morden Kenmor Theatre and November 13 at the Manitou Opera House. With superb dancing and a great acting, the children brought this new adaptation of the classic ballet "Coppelia" to life on stage.
Candlewick Xplor Drama Students Present "The Beverly Hillbillies"
Students from the Manitou Sr. Xplor Drama treated crowds to two superb performances of the hit classic "The Beverly Hillbillies" this last October 28 and 29 at the Manitou Opera House. As the highschool program is designed to train actor/performers to characterize and develop their on-stage skills, students demonstrated their capabilities with confidence and success. With only a few short weeks to prepare, the group entertained appreciative audiences with a script that kept them laughing right to the final curtain call. Well done!
Candlewick Celebrates Great Performances of Beauty and the Beast.
Crowds were treated to five superb performances of community theatre July 28-31 at the Manitou Opera House. With a spectacular cast, the production was complete with terrific sets, amazing costumes, and a truly wonderful presentation of the award-winning musical. Rave reviews continue to come in weeks after the presentations from the appreciative audiences who were in attendance. Many patrons were astounded that community theatre could be presented to this degree. Many thanks are extended to the great performers, the capable crew, and the organizers for a job WELL DONE!!
